Ray Moritz, the owner and lead forester at UFA, has been working with Sudden Oak Death since its first appearance in Marin County in the early 1990s, before it even had a name. He called it "cryptogenic oak decline". He was on the initial task force that found it to be Phytophthora ramorum, an exotic organism (a water mold) aggressively invading its new range.  It has now been isolated from over 100 tree and plant hosts. If you suspect you're oaks may be suffering from the disease and are not sure how to proceed, UFA can confirm or quell your fears and advise you on a course of action - be it prevention, treatment, or damage control.
